Extremely cold weather is in place across most of the Midwest. Temperatures will be well below normal through Monday with near zero or subzero temps in some cases and extreme wind chills are possible. During this time, it is important to protect yourself from the elements and avoid any long-term exposure to the extreme cold temperatures which can be dangerous. It is also important to remember that only you can minimize the energy cost impact to your household or business by lowering the thermostat during the extreme cold period to the extent you can do so safely. A one-degree difference can have a substantial impact to your heating bill during this period. Stay safe!

Other tips for Cold Weather Preparedness:

Home Survival Kit: Stock at least 3 days of water (1 gallon/person/day) and non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered radio, first-aid kit, and medication

Winterize Your Home: Seal cracks, insulate pipes, and check smoke/carbon monoxide detector

Car Kit: Keep a full gas tank. Include a cell phone charger, blankets, warm clothes, food, water, ice scraper, shovel, cat litter/sand for traction, and booster cable

Stay Safe: Limit time outside, wear layers, and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbit

Generator Safety: Use generators outdoors, at least 20 feet away from windows and doors, to avoid carbon monoxide poisonin

Heating Safety: Never use a stove or oven to heat your home. If using a fireplace or space heater, keep items at least 3 feet away

Keep Heat In: Close curtains/blinds and close off unused rooms to retain hea

Check on Neighbors: Ensure elderly or vulnerable neighbors have heat and supplie

Travel Precautions: Only drive if necessary; stay in your car if stranded.
